What you need to know about NCLB

NCLB is based on four key principles: 1. more accountability for results -- a. States are required to set challening state standards in reading and math. b. States are required to conduct annual testing in grades 3-8. -- 2. increased flexibility and more local control -- a. State and local education boards have greater flexibility in allocating money for programs covered under ESEA. -- 3. more options for parents -- a. Parents of students attending schools that persistently perform poorly are provided the opportunity to attend better schools. b. Parents can receive transportation funds for sending their students to schools with better performance. -- 4. importance placed on teaching methodology proven to work -- a. Federal funds will be increased for the Reading First Initiative. b. Funding will be provided to support programs that demonstrate a commitment to increase academic performance.
